We are passionate in sharing Queensland’s natural beauty and creating adventurous, sustainable travel experiences whilst preserving our natural environment for generations to come. We proactively demonstrate our commitment to zero carbon footprint with a multifaceted approach that minimises the impact of our supply chain, supports local environmental initiatives and empowers our school camps to share in our eco-friendly efforts.
Sunset Safaris brings a wealth of knowledge and 23+ years’ experience in delivering unforgettable adventures on stunning remote islands for guests experiencing various disabilities on the spectrum and impairments. Our welcoming guides are first aid trained and experienced in working collaboratively with carers and support workers to cater for some impairments. Please note that our itineraries do require some mobility (or a carer to assist in lifting) for transfers onto our shuttle buses, 4WD tough bus and transparent kayaks.
Trailblazer Tours School camps is the Educational Arm of Australian Sunset Safaris that has been Eco Certified with Eco Tourism Australia. Eco Tourism support visitor economy businesses on a pathway to sustainable practices and global best-practice certification for tourism operators and destinations. As a company we are passionate about our destination and leaving it in pristine condition and educating our visitors of all environmental impact and conservation.
A sustainable and transparent supply chain is an essential foundation in delivering transformational, eco-friendly travel adventures.
Fresh meals and snacks available on our package tours are served using BioPak plant-based and responsibly sourced materials than are certified compostable, including paper cups and biodegradable paper towels. Any materials we use in operating our tours that aren’t compostable are recycled or re-used wherever possible. In our head office, for example, we keep all printing to a minimum (recycling printed materials) and our stationary and printer toner cartridges are refilled or recycled. We also have solar panels installed at our head office to utilise renewable energy and reduce emissions further.
We also consider ecologically friendly sourcing when it comes to accommodation providers for our multiday tours. Our Moreton Island (Mulgumpin) accommodation partner, Castaways, operates off-grid with renewable energy (solar power) and utilises water conservation practices by sourcing from underground aquifers or bores.
Conscious of your carbon footprint? We are too! That’s why we take our commitment to carbon-neutral travel and preserving our local environment even further by offsetting the emissions of several businesses on our shared premises including Exhaust Clean Australia, who support our eco-friendly efforts by reducing exhaust emissions from our shuttle buses and 4WD trucks using diesel particulate filter (DPF) cleaning.
Committed to exploring new frontiers of sustainable tourism, we value creating a collective transformative impact on our communities and environment by supporting local charities and initiatives. We are continuing to build on our engagement with local foundation Ocean Crusaders, whose innovative clean-up efforts on Moreton Island (Mulgumpin) we have been supporting since 2019 by providing a driver guide and transportation for all volunteers around the island in our iconic Australia Sunset Safaris big, red bus to remove almost 5 tonnes of waste!
To assist National Parks and Wildlife service with wetting the sand tracks in summer and peak seasons on Moreton Island, we purchased a fire truck which helped save the Bulwer township during the 2019 fire season.
We provide school camps and excursions aligning with eco-tourism and ACARA curriculum, providing information booklets to school camp based on relevant subjects such as ecology, marine biology and geography. Our school camps visiting sunny Moreton Island have the option to contribute to environmental restoration by adding the planting of natives at Castaway Resort and a visit to the local nursery to their itineraries. This is the perfect opportunity for students to immerse themselves and discover the island’s unique flora and fauna.
Our Great Barrier Reef 3-Day group tours give visitors the unique and unforgettable opportunity to join us in supporting conservational efforts to protect our endangered species of Loggerhead Turtle by experiencing a live turtle encounter (seasonally available November – March) or by exploring the Mon Repos Turtle Centre.
Our students can support these efforts towards a zero carbon footprint on-the-ground in our natural environment by remembering to Zero footprint: ‘leave no trace’ by taking nothing from the island and leaving nothing behind after your adventures. You can also help support our mission to reduce waste by bringing along a reusable water bottle on next eco-adventure with us!
We strongly encourage all students to reduce the use of sunscreens and lotions which could negatively impact the health of the reef ecosystem and our beautiful perched freshwater lakes and spring. There are many alternatives available such as zincs and lotions that do not contain harmful chemicals such as Benzophenone-1, 3-Benzylidene camphor, 4-Methylbenzylidene camphor and Oxybenzone). Aside from using reef safe sunscreen, you can of course seek shade, use Ultraviolet Protection Factor (UPF) sun, and wear a wetsuit (available for hire onboard).
